It's worth a look at John Michael Greer's latest post which is a meditation on planning in the face of a large number of unknowns: precisely the situation which we are all faced with now, and which will be with us for the foreseeable future.
In order not to waste our time and our limited resources this is, in my opinion, the one crucial area where we have to get our thinking right.

I'm based in Wonthaggi and work in alternative fuels, something that I see as vital to the future of communities here and elsewhere.

I tried to engage some vocal locals with Rob Hopkin's transition town work a few years ago but it was hard to muster and maintain interest, and I had my own problems with depression back then (several years of studying peak oil will do that :-)
Energy descent planning and Ted Trainer's work on The Simpler Way are important but maintaining a focused interest among many disparate people is difficult in this machine age with it's many distractions and obligations.
It will likely take a severe event to focus that mindset.
